The RHS is calling for keen amateur garden photographers to enter their best snaps in the RHS Photographic Competition, open until the end of February.
Calling All Garden Photographers
Among nine categories you can enter are one specifically for youngsters under the age of 18, and the Greening Grey Britain category to support the charity’s campaign to transform neglected spaces into flower-filled havens. There’s also a category for wildlife in the garden, to include photographs of insects, birds and other creatures caught on camera in your back yard.
There are cash prizes on offer, and the photographer who takes the picture voted best overall is crowned RHS Photographer of the Year. For more details, visit www.rhs.org.uk/photocomp.
RHS Photo Competition
Back gardens are great places for trying out photographic techniques, so start practising now. Browse through the plants on offer in the garden centre here in Kington for good combinations contrasting forms and shapes – tall, graceful grasses with broad, glossy evergreen leaves and delicate winter flowers, for example. Then wait for that perfect moment: a winter’s morning with frost riming the edge of each leaf with diamonds, perhaps, or a shaft of sunlight at just the right angle, and press that shutter. Who knows, you may catch the shot of a lifetime and win yourself a prize!
