Bush Roses

‘That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’
So said Shakespeare and he knew a thing or two. The British have long had a love affair with Roses and it shows no sigh of diminishing. Every year we sell hundreds of Roses and we pride ourselves on sourcing a range of bushes and climbers to fill almost any garden situation.

To be happy, Roses do require a few very basic essentials.

They are happiest in a sunny situation, they need lots of nutrition to keep on producing flowers, they don’t want to be dried out in a drought or drowned in a flood, and they dislike having to grow where roses have been growing before.
But there are ways of at least bending, whilst not breaking, the rules.
Full sun can become part shade as long as you choose a vigorous healthy variety.
Dry soil can have lots of manure dug into it to help hold moisture, while wet areas can have slightly raised areas to keep the majority of roots out of water in winter.
Feeding really is essential, as if Roses starve they simply don’t flower, so it’s up to you!
The problem of replanting used to necessitate replacing huge amounts of soil.
In recent years however blends of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, bacteria and nutrients have been developed which can be incorporated when planting to overcome this issue. We stock Vitax Q4 Rootmore which is ideal for use in this situation and encourages Roses and other newly planted shrubs and trees to grow abundant healthy root systems.

Our Roses can be divided up into two basic groups – bushes and climbers.

Bush Roses will include the traditional Hybrid Teas, with one spectacular bloom per stem, Floribundas, producing clusters of smaller blooms, and Shrubs, which tend to be slightly larger and more informal.

Climbing roses fall into either Climbers or Ramblers, with the Ramblers tending to be more informal and often only having one major flush of blooms in the early summer. All Roses benefit from correct pruning in early spring, but newly planted ones are best left for their first season to allow them to establish first.

This year has been a difficult one for everyone and our Rose growers have had their share of problems, so we have had to work extra hard to source our usual range of quality plants. We know that some of your favourites are missing but hope this will only be temporary. Each year the industry has its own Miss World for Roses and crowns one particularly fabulous variety Rose of the Year. We are happy to see that in the lists we offer for sale there are no fewer than ten such winners, including the 2020 winner Sweet Honey.
